Rooftop bug collectors find climate change already affecting species

In 1992, Ole Karsholt and Jan Pedersen started collecting bugs in light traps on the roof of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. A quarter-million bugs later, their data on 1543 species of moths and beetles provides astounding evidence that the we don’t need to wait for 2°C of warming before seeing significant effects of temperature change on the insect Community.

Second Bay Area library discovers bedbugs

The North Branch of the Berkeley Public Library was closed Friday morning after bedbugs were discovered in several areas, library officials said today.

The bedbugs were discovered Friday morning after bedbug-sniffing dogs searched the library and found them in the downstairs men’s restroom, under the desks of the public computer area and the in a chair in the adult reading area, officials said.

New French law will ban non-agricultural use of pesticides from 2020

The French parliament has adopted a law which prohibits the private or public use of pesticides from 2020 in green areas, forests or public space.

The law which is to start from 1 January 2020 for private individuals and the public excludes the use of pesticides on railways, airport runways or motorways.

From 1 January 2022, it will be prohibited to place pesticides for non-professional use on the market, to be sold, used or in the possession of someone. Anyone using or found with banned pesticide products could be imprisoned for up to six months with a 30,000 EUR fine. These prohibitions do not apply to the necessary measures such as the destruction and prevention of the spread of pests.
